Film was also invited to Israel’s Ashdod “Love”- themed film festival in April. Regretfully we had to decline as the Jerusalem Int’l FF above demanded to be the film’s Israel premier.

For logistics reasons and to save the film for bigger festivals, we graciously declined the kind invitations to Official Selections in Competition of some international festivals, including: Newport Beach, Palm Beach, Moondance in LA, and Boston International...

A brave & fabulous political comedy about the sparks that fly when a Jew and a  Muslim fall in love in New York!"

The        Q & A with writer/director

A New York independent film inspired by a true story Star-crossed lovers David & Layla: Romeo & Juliet in New York with a twist -  spice, comedy & politics...via Iraq, Kurdistan &  Israel!

Independent film critic, Joe Baltake: "This new comedy about young loves and the large ethnic families (on both sides) that stand between them could have been just another My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but its originality and insight set it apart.
This outright charmer by Jay Jonroy has the potential of being a broad crowd-pleaser, along the lines of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Only David and Layla is a superior variation on that film, with unexpected insights and a tough shell that protects its big, mushy heart. It’s about families of the big, loud, colorful ethnic kind, and the brand of love and rage that coexist, almost too comfortably, within them. David Moscow, the former child actor that played the young Tom Hanks in Big, is all grown up now and stars as David, a nice Jewish guy with an involved but non-stereotypical mother (played by the indispensable Polly Adams), and a high-maintenance girlfriend (Indie fave Callie Thorne). David appreciates tradition but he wants something different – which he finds in the person of Shiva Rose, playing an exotic Muslim refugee threatened with deportation. It’s love at first sight, but they have to move fast if Rose is going to stay in the country. The sitcom contours of this film are impressively balanced by the director’s rapid-fire pacing and sense of place (New York, presented here as a genuine polyglot culture), as well as the witty but realistic dialogue, and the accomplished performances. Adams is particularly impressive, and Rose (wife of actor Dylan McDermott) is at once sexy and sweet. This is an affectionate, likeable film that offers the rare gift of insight. (English, Kurdish with English subtitles.)"

Press Release

DAVID & LAYLA is a film about an impossible romance that gets at the heart of the hypocritical stereotypes and illusions we all have about differing cultures and religions.  David (David Moscow), a young Jewish man finds Layla (Shiva Rose McDermott), a beautiful Muslim immigrant, and can’t get her off his mind.  But her Kurdish culture doesn’t mix with his Upper East Side origins, and both lovers can’t help but mislead their families about one another as they try to begin their affair.  A true comedy of errors ensues from temple to mosque, from perversion to conversion, and all the while their passions increase regardless of this unlikely affair.

"I laughed and cried…it touches the funny bone as well as the heart.”

Films of Conflict & Resolution are unique in their multi-faceted portrayals of conflict around the world.  This film was made against industry odds, but with the belief that once viewed by audiences, it would resonate with a potent message. The film utilizes the power of cinema to increase awareness and understanding of the human realities of war and conflict. The writer/director Jay Jonroy in the face of intense conflict, strives to illuminate the realities of the world around his characters—and thus hope to foster the process of peace and conflict resolution through entertainment, art and vision."

“… so overwhelming, it shouldn't be missed by anyone. Mix in sex, spice, Charlie Chaplin, Saddam Hussein, belly dancing, a Seder and a little of Romeo and Juliet and you might start getting a flavor for this film that will challenge, make you laugh out loud, and get a glimpse into the human forces that are shaping our times… “

"Political & Sexy Entertainment: Even women fall for Layla and her cause!"
